Virtual reality has arrived and is here for good. Now watching VR content is one thing, but shooting 360 degree immersive VR videos is quite another. Sure, there are panoramas, but they will only give you a two-dimensional experience and once you have experienced 360 degree VR, it is agreeably difficult to go back. And why should anyone want to go back anyway? In technology, the way is the way forward and the Insta360 Nano VR camera for your iPhone is the way forward.
Facebook recently opened up its platform to 360 degree VR photos and videos and people had been lapping it up. As expected, there would be a slew of manufacturers allowing you to shoot and upload such VR content straight from your smartphones. The Insta360 is a dual fisheye lens, strap-on, lightning port connected camera add-on for the iPhone 6, 6s and Plus models that shoots, stitches and uploads 360 degree videos.
The videos are shot in 4K resolution at 15fps or 3K resolution at 30fps. The image sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 with a battery that lasts for 100 minutes between charges. The device comes with its own microSD card slot, to store the videos you shoot.
The camera’s packaging can be transformed into a Google Cardboard VR headset, to let you see your VR videos without having to invest in another VR headset. The camera is expected to launch end of June with a US$200 price tag. With this strapped on, prepare to immerse yourself completely in your videos and photos.
