The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus apart, Apple also launched the second generation Apple Watch. The Apple Watch series 2 comes with nifty hardware upgrades but nothing significant on the design front.
Apple claims that after the launch of the Apple Watch, the company became the number 2 watch brand in the world and the top selling smartwatch brand in the world.
The biggest change to the Apple Watch is that instead of being splash proof, it is swimming proof. It can be used at a depth of 50 meters.
The Apple Watch series 2 experience is powered by an S2 processor which Apple claims is up to 50 per cent faster than the S1 processor in the first gen Apple Watch. This dual core processor also gets new GPU.
It also gets a brand new display which can be as bright as up to 1000 nits.
In addition, the Apple Watch series 2 get’s a GPS tracker and a barometer sensor, making it more adept at tracking fitness and also more autonomous in the fact that it doesn’t have to depend on the iPhone anymore.
As mentioned earlier, the design is a total carry forward from the first gen Apple Watch. But as promised, the battery size has increased and with that the Apple Watch 2 is much more efficient, thanks to the new processor and WatchOS 3.
Coming to the WatchOS 3, this is where Apple has cut loose its design team. It now features multi-tasking abilities that can run apps in the background. Also to augment the fitness tracking experience, Apple has added two new apps – Exercise and Breathe that are more like wellness companions.
Apple has also refined the watchOS 3 user interface with a new dock and also an easy interface to switch between watchfaces. You can also write custom replies with a feature called scribble.
Apple has also announced that a version of Pokemon Go is also coming to the Apple Watch.
Among other new features, it features an embedded SOS facility and also the option to unlock your iPhones, iPads or Macs.
The wearable comes in a wide variety of styles in stainless steel, aluminium and a new material called ceramic. The Cupertino-based giant claims it is 4 times stronger than stainless steel. The series 2 is also being offered in Hermes models.
Apple is gearing this towards swimmers and runners. So much so, that the company has partnered with Nike to release the Nike plus model which comes with a perforated finish. Nike and Apple claim that it offers the best running experience that is out there. Users of this watch get access to a membership of Nike’s running club with access to routines and what not. This will be available in four different colours.
The Apple Watch series 2 will start at $369. The same price will be there for the Nike Plus model. On the flipside the original Apple Watch series 1 has been upgraded with the new S2 processor and it will cost $269. Pre-orders will start on September 9 and go on sale on September 16 in the US. The Nike Plus model will be available in late October.
